Luau at the White House
President Obama is breaking with tradition, well at least a picnic tradition. On Thursday, Obama will become the first President to host what is being called "the first-ever White House Luau" for the event traditionally known as the Congressional picnic.
The congressional picnic is usually a relaxed affair with lawmakers and administration official mingling on the South Lawn, enjoying food and music. In the past, Tony Snow and his band performed and other musical groups have also pitched in. The South Lawn is transformed into a "typical" picnic setting complete with wood tables and red and white tablecloths.
This year though, it's going to be an ‘ohana' style affair. The menu was created by an award winning chef from Honolulu, Alan Wong, and the entertainment will feature musicians and dancers from Hawaii performing "traditional song and dance", which to most Americans means - the Hula!
President Obama has deep roots in Hawaii. His grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, also known as "Toots" lived in Honolulu and the Obama's would often spend vacation time on the island. The last time the Obama's were in Hawaii was in December, for a family vacation.
