New CD Releases:
The Bikini Beachcombers
Back in 1995 or so Don Nelson founded The
Exotics, a circa 1963 style surf band with a tinge of Tiki style
thrown in. Thirteen years or so later Don is heading up a swank
foursome swinging out to hapa Haole Hawaiian tunes. Their Cd is packed
with some really nice versions of must have classics such as Hawaiian
War Chant, Hukilau, and Disney's The Tiki Room as well as more obscure
hits like the Catalina Island theme 26 Miles, plus one
original

Arthur Lyman
The good folks at Collectors Choice have
picked up where Rykodisc left off
I wrote the liner notes for one of a series
of three Lyman re-releases in 1996
These versions are done better!
Collectors has released 18 Lyman albums in
their entirety as 9 two-fer CDs. I can't praise these enough. Lyman
has long played third wheel to Les Baxter's groundbreaking Exotica
compositions which begat Martin Denny's genre-establishing Exotica
small jazz combo of which Lyman was Denny's protoge and offshoot. But
Lyman took the genre to a different level. Over the years he explored
a more sonic, transcendental, exotic version of Exotica and applied it
to the hits of the day. He also explored deeper into Hawaiian and
Asian music than Denny.
Amongst these nine CDs you will find subtle,
quiet, vibe-led Exotica with plenty of bird calls. You will find Jazz
done with an Exotica flare. And you will find Exotica style 1960s
psychedelic Pop with vibes joining electric guitar!
Liner notes are written by SCRAM magazine
editors David Smay and Kim Cooper. The only bummer is that David's
cool recapping of Lyman's life is used as the intro for each CD. Kim
offers new content in the form of review-style notes for each
CD.
Don't be fooled by lame, generic cover art.
each release has the cover of both Lps printed in full color. All you
have to do is take the front booklet out and fold it backwards to show
the cool orig Lp cover art! The CD also contains a reprint of one of
the Lp back covers
If you know nothing about Lyman and want to
purchase just one CD to get a taste I would have to recommend Bahia
backed with Lyman's second release Bwana A both from 1959. Both are
classic Exotica genre must haves. If you already have these classics
then I can only recommend that you buy all 8 of the other
CDs!
Check em out here.

Look for the double titles separated by a slash. Steer clear of
the Greatest Hits package - it is not bad but I'm sure you would
rather have the full experience of a Lyman lp in its original
format
Richard Cheese
yes, Richard Cheese is currently working on a Hawaiian tunes lp.
Until that is released you can brush up on your Cheese by checking out
his other classic Lounge takes on current Rock, Rap, and Pop standards
on CDs such as: "I'd Like a Virgin", "The Sunny Side of
the Moon", and "Apertif for Destruction"
And songs by artists such as:
AC/DC, RADIOHEAD, BRITNEY SPEARS, LED ZEPPELIN, RAGE AGAINST THE
MACHINE, PUSSYCAT DOLLS, DEF LEPPARD, KHIA, KANYE WEST,
SCORPIONS
Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine deliver the Dean
Martin Las Vegas Lounge act of 2008

Mondo Exotica - Sounds, Visions, Obsessions
of the Cocktail Generation
Originally issued in Italian only in 2000 to chronicle the
then-booming Lounge scene in America and Europe
As usual, The Europeans always get it right! Radio DJ and
journalist Francesco Adinolfi gives a Euro perspective of the trend
and offers background history of various odd aspects such as pet
Chihuahuas and popularity of leopard prints.
Adinolfi backs his text with extensive footnotes revealing the
depth of his research.
A comprehensive Discography cover vintage and new music as well
as soundtracks.
For those who were there this will be a fact filled recap and
resource. For those just getting into vintage Lounge music this is
your handbook!
I could go on for pages about how great this book is. Get it for
yourself and get a copy for a friend.

Viewing:
Shag documentary
"The Sophisticated Misfit" is a long-awaited must-have for
fans of Shag and Tiki fan alike. The 65 minute documentary traces the
artist's roots growing up in Hawaii, his artistic journey in college,
his early work designing album covers, to his modern day role as an
art-world phenom. In addition to exclusive footage of Shag painting in
his home studio, the film features intimate interviews with the
artist, his family, artistic influences, tiki-files, celebrity
collectors and fans.
Special features include a demonstration by Shag's silk-screener
of the creation of the "Well Hung" print, and a tour of
fellow Orange County artist and Shag collaborator Paul Frank's
workshop. With a soundtrack featuring the music of the Dynatones,
Clouseaux, and Shag's former band, the Tiki Tones, "The
Sophisticated Misfit" would be a welcome addition to every Shag
fan's collection.
