[Tikievents] Waitiki + Br Cleve free, Royal Hawaiian Laguna Bch

Friday, 9/14
Hawaiian Nights w Waitiki and DJ Brother Cleve
8pm, free
Union Square, Somerville, MA

Brother Cleve says:
"I know that, if you're like me, when you think of Hawaii, your thoughts turn to images of pigeons, bus shelters & belching buses, ethnic groceries, Brazilian bakeries, Punjabi gentlemen on benches conversing, the Midnight Spa, and of course, Ricky's Flower Mart.

hmm......sounds a bit more like Somerville. Can one go surfing on the Mystic River?

Probably not, but this Friday, for one night only, Union Sq is going to be transformed into the mythical Honolulu of your dreams. Enchanting diesel fumes will overcome your senses -- think of it as the "Orchids Of Somerville".

VDA Productions and Arts Somerville, in conjunction with the Somerville Arts Council (is there a Director of Redundancy in the house?) present "Hawaiian Nights" this Friday Sept 14 (rain date: Saturday) at 7:30 in the heart of Union Sq (over by Toast and The Independent). Enjoy the exotic sounds of Waitiki and The Mai Tai Serenaders, DJ'ing by yrs trly, hula dancers and Polynesian dance arts, vintage films of Hawaii and Polynesia, and other special events! There will be refreshments (Virgin Mai Tai's, etc), though not the full bodied kind you'd get at the Kowloon or Tiki Island, if you catch my drift.

This event is free and open to all ages.

The Royal Hawaiian in Laguna beach, CA is under new ownership

Here's an update from Ross Tucker:

The Royal Hawaiian in Laguna Beach has changed owners. The new owner Tom
(don't know his last name) is a really, really cool guy who is completely in
touch with what a local staple that place was, is and always has been. He
wants to make sure he keeps the tradition and history going. We (us locals
who wake up everyday to worship that place!) were all afraid that it was
going to go bourgeoisie (or however you spell that french word for snobbish
or elitist). You know...take the tiki feel out of the place, raise prices,
go with a whole new genre of drinks (apple martinis boooo etc.) and menu
items. Well...I'm glad to report that he is keeping all drinks...including
the Lapu Lapu and menu items. He is going to add some items on the menu,
which is most likely a welcome idea. Also happy to say that the Ono Ono
salad dressing is alive and well.

Patrons who wear a Royal Hawaiian shirt get 20 percent off on all drink and
food purchases as well!!!

When I went down there recently and introduced myself, he gave me 20% off of
my tee shirt purchase, bill for drinks and food, as well as sent me back to
AZ with not only one...but TWO pints of Ono Ono salad dressing that made my
wife very, very happy!

He is still remodeling with half of the restaurant open for business and the
bar is still open in it's original condition. He is going to tear out the
bar and expand the restaurant part. However...he's going to keep the same
excellent tiki feel, move the bar to the center of the restaurant and make
it bigger!

So, all in all...I'm very, very happy that he's the owner now and welcome
the changes and thank God that he's preserving a huge piece or our history.
