Closing Party for The Kahiki (fwd)

This is the first official email announcement to my list sorry for
the delays, but I just received final confirmation. (My e-mail is
currently not working for the next few days, if urgent please e-mail
me via Baby Doe at: babydoe@babydoe.net)

Please read the entire text here and please feel free to forward it.

The Kahiki is arguably the best Tiki bar in the world. On Friday,
August 25 it will close at its current/original location and will
reopen a year later in downtown Columbus. The building dates back to
1960 and was recently placed on the National Register of Historic
sites - the only Tiki bar to do so and a rare honor for buildings
from the 60s. Little has changed in its decor - all has been
maintained but plumbing and structural problems to the building have
forced the owners to make a financial decision to move.

You can view the kahiki at its own site and at the save the Kahiki site
http://www.kahiki.com

Join us for this historic celebration on the last day that the
original Kahiki can be viewed in its original state!

Private V.I.P. party featuring
the first mainland appearance ever by
Don Tiki the first new Exotica band since 1970
Don Tiki will play two full sets - 9 members of multi-talented combo
will be on hand to recreate authentic Exotica sounds
PLUS, all the way from Hollywood via Bosnia (that's true!)
King Kukulele
Recently shown in the NY Times for his triumphant antics at the
biggest ukulele festival in America King Kukulele is an unparalled
entertainer who knows over 300 tunes, takes requests, and mixes
improv comedy into his sets which musically span from the 1920s to
the present
PLUS
all night long in the banquet room
enjoy obscure sounds from famous Exotica disc jockeys probably
including but not limited to:
WFMU Rex Doane (Brooklyn), Bar d'O co-founder Jack Fetterman (NYC),
Les Baxter chronicler Jeff Chenault (Columbus), Enoch Light brigadeer
Michael Toth (Cleveland), former Combustible Edisonite Brother Cleve
(Boston)

Sven-Tiki will be on hand (hopefully) signing his new book

There will be a vending table/gift shop selling Tiki wares of various origin

THE MYSTERY GIRL
Revelers can tour the entire restaurant and bar and dine in the
restaurant or the downstairs banquet room which is usually not open
to the public. The mystery girl will be on hand to perform the
mystery drink ceremony. If you dare try this deadly concoction
everyone around you will know - the gong will sound signalling that
you are about to receive the hallowed bowl with the mysterious
mixture. Then, out of nowhere, comes a wahine you have never seen
before (usually younger and more scantily clad than your waitress)
and in her hands she holds your precious potion (or deadly drink
depending on how many times you want to try this!)

There will be a story about this event running on luxuriamusic.com
later this month
The Millionaire/Luxuria music is looking for volunteers to digitally
film the event and loan their footage so it can be posted on their
site in their video archives
email: millioniare@luxuriamusic.com

We are taking reservation via phone and email at the Kahiki
You must tell the Kahiki or write as the first sentence of your email
"Otto von Stroheim sent me"
in order to get on the reservation list. The Kahiki has had a large
response from local residents and has stopped taking reservations due
to the response!
The only way to get on the reservation list is to do it via the Tiki News list
Reserving a ticket does not guarantee that you have a ticket
Right now I only have 50 tickets available so unless some of the
previous reservations cancel, which is very likely, that is what can
actually be sold to Tiki News readers
we are anticipating that the response will be overwhelming and some
people may get turned away
This event will sell out by Aug 1, 2000.
After all of you have had a chance to reserve this information will
be posted to my website for public consumption

Columbus is pretty close to Cleveland. You can fly into Cleveland and
rent a car and drive down. I think it is about 1.5 hours to Columbus.
Whatever you do, DO NOT fly SHUTTLE UNITED!
I will post to the list a listing of local vintage hotels that have
been checked out by Jeff Chenault or Michael Toth.

If you are receiving this and are not already a member of the Tiki
News mailing list please join by going to our website at tikinews.com
and filling in your email address. You can unsubscribe from the list
at any time by following the simple instructions at the bottom of
each email sent from the list. The list is totally private - even I
don't know who is on it! I will only post details of the show to my
list from now til Aug 25.

Lastly, I had another email software crash that wiped out my address
book and all old email sent and received for the past few months. If
you have corresponded with me during that time please write again and
let me know where we left off.

thanks
Otto
